In the summer of 2023 we went to Alaska, a big hit on our bucket list. Alaska is the 49th US state and considered to be the last frontier where anything can happen at those. We combined sailing with the land trip. We set sails in Vancouver and went north. The first stop is Ketchikan, Alaska’s oldest city, originally founded by the Russians. Ketchikan is in all ways a frontier city. It is the land of salmon and lumberjack shows. We went to a totem museum, and I savoured the local brews. Next stop was Icy Strait where a cabin lift took us to the top for stunning views. We also went the trip along the beautiful bay. The following day took us to Juneau, the capital of Alaska. The attraction here is the enormous Mendenhall glacier outside the city. On the way we saw wild eagles soaring in the sky. Juneau also has an impressive microbrew scene that was explored before departure. Our final embarkation was Skagway, formerly the gateway to the gold rush of Klondike. The gold diggers had to possible routes: one was described as damnation, the other as hell. At the peak it was a bustling city lots of brothels of which one is now turned into a museum. It is possible to hike adorable walks above the city. Before this embarking this ship we saw more stunning glaciers and wild fiords. From Anchorage we went on a road trip up through Denali NP, staying in a wonderful legendary little cabin in Talkeetna and a block house near Cantwell. Everything was as expected from the childhood adventure books, including wild bear and moose. Denali itself was hard to see in the clouds, but we drove all the possible way up to Savage River, before the road was blocked by a landslide. Through Fairbanks we took the long Alaska Highway and grabbed a little corner of Yukon by going to Whitehorse and beyond. The road back was long and lovely yet beautiful. Alaska is something totally special. There's a big surplus of men in Alaska but they might be somehow strange. I said local guide put it UN women's chances of finding a man in Alaska: the odds are good, but the goods are odd!
